Microbiology - CBL
Case based learning in Microbiology - simple prototype
The “Virtual Microbiologist” CBL Module
What It Is & How to Use It
This interactive Case-Based Learning (CBL) module simulates the workflow of a clinical diagnostic laboratory. Students begin by selecting a patient scenario from a “Case Board,” presenting real-world clinical histories (e.g., post-surgical infection, meningitis outbreak). Inside the virtual lab, users act as the microbiologist: they must actively request diagnostic tests—including Gram stains, culture plates, and biochemical assays (Catalase, Coagulase, Indole, etc.)—to reveal high-fidelity medical imagery. After analyzing the visual data against the clinical context, students submit a diagnosis via a reporting interface.
Student Benefits
This tool moves beyond passive memorization by enforcing active recall and clinical reasoning. Instead of reading about Staphylococcus aureus, students must recognize it visually under a microscope and confirm it biochemically, mirroring professional practice. The immediate feedback loop—providing specific corrective guidance for errors and high-yield “COMLEX Pearls” for correct diagnoses—reinforces learning instantly, bridging the gap between basic science and clinical application.
Future Curriculum Alignment
To ensure this platform meets the rigorous demands of university medical curricula (MD/DO/MBBS), future updates will incorporate:
Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (AST): Implementation of Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion panels to teach antibiotic selection and stewardship, a critical competency in modern medicine.
Longitudinal Performance Analytics: Instructor dashboards to track student progress, identifying specific knowledge gaps (e.g., “Student struggles differentiating Gram-negative rods”).
Expanded Pathogen Library: Inclusion of parasitology and virology cases to cover the full scope of the standard Microbiology syllabus.
LMS Integration: Seamless grade syncing with platforms like Canvas and Blackboard for automated assessment.
